DORSEY, Miss. (AP) — When Charlie Martin was in elementary school, he would go to his grandmother’s house every week and ask the exact same question: “Will you cook me chicken pot pie?”

At the age of 7, he was in the kitchen by her side, learning to make this chicken pot pie. After half a dozen lessons, he prepared them all by himself.

“When I was 8, I started grilling everything I could, just to see how it would turn out,” the now 15-year-old Martin said. “After showing my parents a few times that I could cook, they started trusting me to do it on my own.”

Martin said that when he was around 9 years old and not in school for the summer, he stayed up until 11:30 p.m. or midnight and was bored. So he would head to the kitchen and prepare a full meal.

“Then I would wake up my parents to see if they wanted to taste it,” he said. “I would say, ‘Please, please, please’ until they’ve tried at least one bite of it.”

Martin is a sophomore at Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, where he plays right tackle and center linebacker for the football team and is an outfielder and pitcher for the baseball team.

Her mother, Kristi, owns the Black Sheep store in Tupelo and her father, Grant, is the manager of the Dorsey Attendance Center. He has four brothers – Noah, Braeden, Sam and Will.

Martin learned to make chocolate sauce from his maternal grandmother, Linda Shackelford Greene of Tupelo, but the majority of his cooking skills came from his paternal grandmother, Kaye Martin, who lives across the country. street.

“Nana literally taught me everything about cooking,” Martin said. “I discovered grilling on YouTube and watching MasterChef Canada. Soon I got pretty good at it.

Martin started grilling chicken and steaks, but now he enjoys grilling fish and vegetables.

“You have to bring the fish to the perfect temperature,” he said. “I like to catch salmon, snapper, triggerfish and catfish. I’m a big deep-sea fisherman, so every time we go to the beach, I bring some back here.

For years, Martin avoided vegetables.

“Before, I hated them,” he says. “Then I realized they were good for you. Now I grill mushrooms, onions, squash, zucchini, peppers. I don’t think you can go wrong with a jalapeño pepper.

Martin also likes to bake cupcakes, muffins and casseroles, and he makes his own batters from flour and egg yolks.

“My friends think it’s cool that I like to cook,” he said. “Most of them can only cook food in the microwave. My mom says cooking is a great way to seduce girls, but I haven’t seen the proof of that yet.
